Nakaseke, Uganda:

The Ministry of Water and Environment has officially handed over the Kaweweta Solar Water Supply and Irrigation System to the military for operation and maintenance, marking a significant milestone in improving water access and sustainability within the area.
The handover ceremony was officiated by Brigadier General Justus Rukundo, Commandant of the Oliver Reginald Tambo Leadership School, alongside a team from the Water and Sanitation Development Facility–Central (WSDF–Central).
The newly completed solar-powered system is designed to provide safe, reliable, and sustainable water to Oliver R. Tambo Leadership School located within Kaweweta Cantonment Barracks while also supporting irrigation for agricultural production.
According to the Ministry of Water and Environment, the project is part of broader government efforts to expand access to clean water and promote climate-resilient infrastructure across the country.
“This solar-powered water supply and irrigation system will enhance access to safe water for both institutional and community use while supporting sustainable agricultural practices within Kaweweta,” the Ministry said in a statement.
Beyond the military facility, the project will directly benefit surrounding community institutions, including Tambo Primary School and Kaweweta Health Center, improving access to clean water and strengthening public health outcomes.
Officials noted that the integration of irrigation into the system is expected to boost food production and support livelihoods, particularly within the barracks and neighboring communities.
The project was implemented by the Ministry of Water and Environment through the Water and Sanitation Development Facility–Central, one of the government’s key arms for delivering water and sanitation infrastructure in urban and peri-urban areas.
Construction works were undertaken by Nexus Green Limited, under the supervision of SARI Consulting Limited, in a joint venture with SGAPI, ensuring adherence to technical and environmental standards.
The Ministry emphasized that investments in solar-powered water systems are aligned with Uganda’s commitment to sustainable development and climate adaptation, particularly in water-stressed and rapidly growing areas.
